Mackay Chamber represents local businesses to support change for the Heavy Haulage Industry

In 2019, the Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce approached the Mackay Regional Council to highlight the impact that multiple layers of red tape have on the Heavy Haulage industry; and subsequently the effect on the local economy.

It is the movement of mining machinery between the Bowen Basin and Paget that causes the greatest economic consequences to Mackay both directly and indirectly. However the negative effect also flows onto agriculture and logistics as well as our retail stores.

The MRC Transport and Drainage Infrastructure Planning team initially sat down with the Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce and a group of businesses to understand all the stakeholder limitations and provide some solutions.

On Thursday February 13 2020, MRC Transport and Drainage Infrastructure Planning team showed leadership and extended on that initial discussion. They pulled together representatives from the four jurisdictions (Mackay, Whitsunday, Isaac and Main Roads) involved and extended a blanket invite to all heavy haulage operators in the area.

This resulted in a strong and insightful workshop, with all the authorities walking away with some homework.
